Synopsis
Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears (Москва слезам не верит, 1980) is Vladimir Menshov's beloved Soviet melodrama, free to watch online on iFILM. Three small-town friends arrive in the capital at the end of the 1950s, each chasing a different idea of happiness.
Antonina marries a steady working man and quietly builds a solid home. Lyudmila treats Moscow like a lottery, certain the right husband is the winning ticket. Katerina (Vera Alentova) falls hard for a smug TV cameraman, ends up pregnant and abandoned — and refuses to be broken by it. Then the story leaps twenty years ahead: that same Katerina now runs a major factory, successful but still alone, until a chance commuter-train meeting with a plain-spoken mechanic named Gosha (Aleksey Batalov) upends the careful life she's built. Irina Muravyova, Raisa Ryazanova and Oleg Tabakov fill out the ensemble.
Menshov pulled off something rare here, folding hard truths about a woman's lot in Soviet life into warm, easy comedy — hence the tagline about the tenderest love story of the year. The film took home the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1981, and Gosha's lines have been quoted at Russian kitchen tables ever since.
