Synopsis
We Are What We Are (Somos lo que hay, 2010) is a Mexican horror film you can watch online on iFILM. A father collapses and dies on a city street, leaving his family without the one person who used to feed them — in the most literal sense. They are cannibals, and their ritual demands fresh prey.
The grim work now falls to the children. Eldest son Alfredo isn't ready to fill his father's shoes, the younger brother takes to violence far too easily, and the mother rules the household through fear and fanatical belief. Paulina Gaitán and Francisco Barreiro play heirs to a tradition that has curdled into a curse. Director Jorge Michel Grau isn't after gore for its own sake — he builds a bleak drama about poverty on the edges of Mexico City, where hunger and custom turn out to be scarier than any monster.
The film premiered at Cannes and pushed a fresh wave of attention toward Mexican horror, later spawning a US remake. The dread here creeps in slowly and lingers, which cuts deeper than any cheap jump scare. One for viewers who like art-house horror with a social edge.
