Synopsis
Alexander Nevsky (1938) is a Soviet historical epic directed by Sergei Eisenstein — watch online on iFILM. Nikolai Cherkasov plays the 13th-century Novgorod prince who leaves a fishing village to lead a badly outnumbered militia against the Teutonic Knights pushing into Russian lands.
Pskov has already fallen. The German commanders carve up territory they haven't conquered yet and hand each other princely titles. Nevsky pulls his forces onto the ice of Lake Chudskoe in April 1242, turning the terrain itself into a weapon against armour-clad invaders. Two warriors among his ranks — Gavrilo Aleksich and Vasili Buslaev — fight each other's bravery as fiercely as they fight the enemy, both competing for the same woman.
Prokofiev wrote the score, and the Battle on the Ice sequence has been studied and referenced by filmmakers ever since. Stream Alexander Nevsky online on iFILM — one of Soviet cinema's most enduring works, still striking at nearly 90 years old.
