Synopsis
The Wind (1928) is a landmark silent drama starring Lillian Gish that you can watch online on iFILM. Letty Mason arrives in the West Texas plains, where the wind never stops blowing.
Sand creeps through every wall, cattle die in the gales, and the locals swear the endless wind drives people insane. Her cousin's wife greets her with open hostility and wants her gone. Three men press their attentions on Letty, and she finds herself trapped between other people's cruelty, the poverty of the prairie and her own fear. Gish carries it almost wordlessly, on her face alone.
Swedish director Victor Sjöström brought a stark Nordic chill to Hollywood and reshaped a melodrama into a psychological thriller about the desert as a prison. Its closing storm sequence is still studied as a peak of silent filmmaking. Stream The Wind online on iFILM.
