Synopsis
I Was Born, But… (1932) is a silent Japanese comedy-drama by Yasujiro Ozu, available to watch online on iFILM. Two young brothers idolize their father — until the day they learn he is just a meek clerk who bows to his boss.
When their dad lands a promotion, the family moves to a Tokyo suburb. The boys arrive as outsiders, get pushed around by the local kids, then turn the tables and become the toughest pair on the block. Their confidence collapses the afternoon they watch home movies at the boss's house and see their father clowning for laughs, eager to please. If he rules the family, why does he grovel at work? Tatsuo Saitô plays the father with zero vanity, while child actors Hideo Sugawara and Tomio Aoki carry whole stretches of the picture on their own.
This is early Ozu at his sharpest: not a sentimental story about kids, but a quietly furious look at a boy crashing into the adult pecking order for the first time. Kinema Junpo named it the best film of the year, and it still ranks among the high points of Japanese silent cinema. Stream I Was Born, But… (1932) online on iFILM.
