Synopsis
Late Autumn (秋日和, 1960) — watch online on iFILM. Yasujiro Ozu shot this late-career comedy-drama in color, one of his last films with Setsuko Hara, who retired from acting just a couple of years later.
A widow named Akiko faces mounting pressure to remarry — not from her daughter, but from three old friends of her late husband who take it upon themselves to manage everyone's happiness. Their original target for matchmaking is Akiko's daughter Ayako (Yoko Tsukasa), but Ayako has her own plans, and her mother's contentment with solitude reads as a problem to everyone but herself. The comedy is gentle; the loneliness underneath it is not.
Ozu built the film with his signature camera locked close to the floor, long silences, and a patience for domestic detail that makes every small gesture carry weight. It is a companion piece to his Late Spring (1949) — there a widowed father pushed his daughter toward marriage, here the positions reverse. Stream Late Autumn online on iFILM.
