Synopsis
Watch Grand Hotel (1932) online on iFILM — Edmund Goulding's MGM drama that took home the Academy Award for Best Picture and assembled a cast that has never quite been replicated: Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, John Barrymore, Lionel Barrymore, and Wallace Beery, all in one building, all in the same film.
The setting is a grand Berlin hotel over the course of a single day. A fading ballerina is on the verge of collapse and falls for a charming thief. A dying clerk draws his savings to spend one last moment actually living. A ruthless industrialist circles his young stenographer, and the baron who has nothing left tries to make something out of the wreckage. The film never leaves the building and never needs to — the hotel is a sealed world where every arrival triggers consequences that ripple across the other stories.
Goulding stitched the multi-strand format together so cleanly that the movies which borrowed it for the next century rarely acknowledged the debt. Garbo delivers "I want to be alone" here — one of those rare lines that was iconic before anyone had time to make it a cliché. Stream Grand Hotel (1932) on iFILM.
