Synopsis
Equinox Flower (1958) is a Yasujiro Ozu family drama you can watch online on iFILM. It was the director's first film in color, and the deep reds of teapots and walls are no accident — Ozu composed by color as strictly as he once did by line in black and white.
Hirayama, a successful Tokyo businessman, talks like a modern man — he happily tells other people's children to marry for love. But when his own daughter announces she has already chosen a husband and won't sit for an arranged match, he digs in and refuses. The women of the household — his wife, his younger daughter and a sharp-tongued acquaintance from Kyoto — quietly outmaneuver him.
Ozu films it with his signature low, still camera and a gentle streak of irony, turning a generational clash into something soft-spoken and painfully familiar. Shin Saburi leads, with the great Kinuyo Tanaka beside him. It's a quiet, finely tuned piece for anyone who loves Japanese classics and family stories without the melodrama.
