Synopsis
The Book of Clarence (2024) is Jeymes Samuel's irreverent biblical epic, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Jerusalem, 33 AD. Clarence is broke, deep in debt, and decides to cash in on the season's biggest craze: belief in a rising prophet out of Nazareth.
His scheme is simple and shameless — declare himself a messiah, gather followers, and charge for staged miracles. LaKeith Stanfield carries two roles, Clarence and his twin brother, the apostle Thomas. Around him are Omar Sy, RJ Cyler, David Oyelowo and Teyana Taylor. James McAvoy turns up as Pontius Pilate, and Benedict Cumberbatch arrives in a part best left unspoiled. The longer the con runs, the harder it gets for Clarence to pretend that faith is just merchandise.
Samuel, whose debut The Harder They Fall reworked the Western, directs; Jay-Z produced, and the soundtrack pulls as much weight as the frame. The real trick is how a street-level story about a poor man is stitched into a gilded sword-and-sandal spectacle. This one is for viewers who want their parables with friction rather than piety.
