John Brown is a clumsy, good-hearted security guard who has always wanted to be a real cop. His chance arrives the hard way, in an explosion set off by a villain. A robotics lab patches him back together with thousands of built-in gadgets, from spring-loaded legs to a helicopter that pops out of his hat, and the press dubs him Inspector Gadget. Alongside his clever niece Penny and her talking dog Brain, he sets out to track down the man behind the blast, billionaire Sanford Scolex (Rupert Everett), who is busy building a robot double of his own.

Broderick plays the hero with genuine bumbling charm, and the gadgets misfire at all the wrong moments in a way kids tend to love. It runs a brisk 78 minutes and keeps the plot light, aimed mostly at younger viewers and anyone who grew up on the series.
