Synopsis
A Christmas Carol (1999) is a fantasy drama adaptation of Charles Dickens you can watch online on iFILM. Director David Hugh Jones cast Patrick Stewart as Ebenezer Scrooge — and the choice pays off: Stewart plays the miser without winking at the audience, which makes the character's eventual reckoning land harder than it would in a softer interpretation. On Christmas Eve, three spirits drag Scrooge through his own life in sequence — a boyhood he buried, a present he's actively poisoning, and a grave that's been waiting patiently for him.
Dickens knocked out the original novella in six weeks in 1843, and it has been adapted for screen more times than almost any other story in English literature. This version's edge is its cast rather than its production scale: Richard E. Grant, Joel Grey, Dominic West and Ian McNeice fill out a sharp ensemble around Stewart. What the film gets right is treating Scrooge not as a pantomime villain but as someone who made a long series of deliberate choices to close himself off — and is now being handed the invoice.
