Synopsis
Magical Nights (Notti magiche, 2018) is an Italian dark comedy from director Paolo Virzì — watch it online on iFILM. Rome, the night of 4 July 1990: Italy's national team is knocked out of the World Cup on penalties by Argentina, and a prominent film producer is found floating in the Tiber.
Police bring in three young aspiring screenwriters who were with him that night. Each tells a different story. The statements don't match. What follows is part murder mystery, part satirical portrait of the Italian film industry — provincial ambition, producer politics, and a city caught between grief and street celebration all in the same hour.
Virzì uses the mystery as a frame for something more personal: a fond but clear-eyed look at Rome's film world at a turning point, seen through the eyes of three outsiders who wanted in.
