Synopsis
My Name Is Tanino (2003) is an Italian-Canadian comedy by director Paolo Virzì that you can watch online on iFILM, with Corrado Fortuna as the title character and an early-career Rachel McAdams as the American girl who sets the plot in motion.
One Sicilian summer, film student Tanino has a brief fling with Sally, a tourist passing through. She flies back to the States and doesn't call. Tanino, not quite getting the hint, follows her across the Atlantic on the thin excuse of returning her forgotten camera. What he finds bears little resemblance to the America he'd conjured in his head: Sally's wealthy family, their world, and Sally herself are all more complicated than a summer romance suggested.
Virzì frames the whole thing as a fond, gentle joke at the expense of a small-town romantic who confuses a postcard with a destination. The film earns its warmth because Tanino is genuinely likable — earnest, clueless, hard not to root for.
