Synopsis
The Mourning Forest (殯の森, 2007) is a Japanese drama by filmmaker Naomi Kawase you can watch online on iFILM — the film claimed the Grand Prix at Cannes that year. Machiko (Machiko Ono) works at a small rural retirement home while silently carrying the loss of her own child. Her elderly charge, Shigeki, has spent decades in quiet mourning for a wife who died long before.
When Machiko takes Shigeki on a day trip into the countryside, a mudslide sends the car off the road. Instead of waiting for help, Shigeki sets off into the forest — and Machiko follows. Kawase shoots what comes next with almost no dialogue, letting landscape, light, and physical effort carry the weight. A slow film, deliberately so — and the kind that rewards the patience it demands. Stream The Mourning Forest (2007) online on iFILM.
