Synopsis

Evil Does Not Exist (悪は存在しない, 2023) is a Japanese drama by Ryusuke Hamaguchi — the Oscar-winning director of Drive My Car — that you can watch online on iFILM. The film took the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival and confirmed Hamaguchi as one of contemporary cinema's most deliberate and unsettling voices.

In a quiet mountain village an hour outside Tokyo, a widowed woodsman named Takumi raises his young daughter Hana on a rhythm dictated by the forest and the local spring water. That equilibrium breaks when two representatives from a Tokyo entertainment company arrive to smooth things over ahead of a planned glamping resort. The problem: the sewage plan is undersized, and the runoff will poison the groundwater the whole village drinks. The town meeting that follows is polite, factual and quietly devastating.

Hamaguchi shoots with long, patient takes that build pressure rather than release it. This isn't a film about good guys versus bad guys — nobody here is villainous; everyone is just following their own logic. That's what makes the ending land so hard.
