Synopsis
Stalingrad (2013) is a Russian war film directed by Fyodor Bondarchuk, available to watch online on iFILM. Produced as Russia's first IMAX 3D feature, it drops into the autumn of 1942 — the grinding block-by-block combat for a city that had become a point of no return for both sides.
A small squad of Soviet scouts under Captain Gromov crosses the Volga under fire and holds a single building on the riverbank. Their orders are to keep it at any cost. Inside they find Katya, played by Maria Smolnikova — a nineteen-year-old who refused to leave and now lives in the ruins. Across the rubble, German officer Kahn, played by Thomas Kretschmann, is ordered to retake the same structure. Two enemies, one address, no way out.
Bondarchuk keeps the epic battle human-sized: five soldiers, one woman, one building. The scale of the production is real — this was one of the most expensive Russian films of its era — but the story stays close to the faces. Stream Stalingrad (2013) online on iFILM.
