Synopsis
9th Company (2005) is a Russian war drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Fyodor Bondarchuk — who also plays a supporting role in his own film. Seven raw conscripts survive brutal training and are deployed into the Soviet-Afghan War in its final year.
Their orders: take Hill 3234, hold it until the convoy passes through. What the orders don't cover is the cold, the isolation, and the mujahideen who know the terrain far better. Aleksei Chadov, Artur Smolyaninov, Konstantin Kryukov and Mikhail Porechenkov each carry distinct weight — the film earns its carnage because it takes time with the men first.
Bondarchuk's debut feature became the highest-grossing Russian film of 2005, taking five Golden Eagle Awards. It doesn't treat the Afghan War as a backdrop for heroics — it treats it as the thing that happened, whether the country was watching or not. Stream 9th Company online on iFILM.
