Synopsis
Decalogue III (Dekalog, trzy, 1989) is a short drama by Krzysztof Kieślowski you can watch online on iFILM. It's Christmas Eve in a Warsaw apartment block, and cab driver Janusz is settling in for the evening with his wife and children.
The calm shatters at the door. Ewa (Maria Pakulnis), his former lover, turns up claiming her husband has vanished and begs him to help search the city. Janusz (Daniel Olbrychski) heads out into the freezing night, and bit by bit the truth surfaces: no one is missing. The whole errand is a ploy to keep him close for a few stolen hours. The third commandment — keep the sabbath holy — becomes a question of who really needs you on a holy night.
This is the third of ten hour-long films Kieślowski made for Polish television, each loosely tied to one of the Ten Commandments. Cinematographer Piotr Sobociński shoots the icy, half-empty streets until the cold gets under your skin. Quiet and bruising, it rewards anyone who likes European arthouse that trusts its silences.
