Synopsis

No End (Bez końca, 1985) is a drama by Krzysztof Kieślowski you can watch online on iFILM. It unfolds in Poland during the grim months of martial law, with Solidarity outlawed and the whole country holding its breath.

Antek Zyro, a gifted young lawyer, dies suddenly of a heart attack. His widow Urszula — a translator played by Grażyna Szapołowska — is left alone with their small son and a grief that neither work nor motherhood can touch. Antek doesn't fully leave, though: he lingers on screen as a quiet observer of the life he left behind. Meanwhile his unfinished case drags on — a political prisoner he was defending, now handed to an aging lawyer, Labrador, who takes the hopeless trial against his own better judgment. Kieślowski keeps one woman's mourning and a nation's mourning inside the same frame.

This is a turning point in his filmography: it marks the start of his work with screenwriter Krzysztof Piesiewicz and composer Zbigniew Preisner, whose scores would later define Three Colors and The Double Life of Véronique. Heavy, slow and deeply Polish, it's a film about loss and the impossibility of comfort — not a casual evening, but essential for anyone serious about arthouse cinema.
