Synopsis
Blind Chance (Przypadek, 1987) is a Polish drama by Krzysztof Kieślowski that you can watch online on iFILM. A young medical student named Witek sprints for a train on a Łódź platform. Whether he catches it sets off three entirely separate stories — three versions of one man's life under late communist Poland.
In the first, he boards the train, meets a party official and slides into a career of useful compromises. In the second, he misses it, lands in a scuffle with police and falls in with the underground opposition. In the third, the train leaves without him, he goes home, marries, and spends years trying to stay out of history altogether. Bogusław Linda plays Witek in all three, the same man reshaped by a few seconds of chance. The film was finished in 1981 but sat on a censor's shelf until 1987.
Kieślowski was asking here what he'd keep asking through the Three Colors trilogy: how much of a person is fixed, and how much is just circumstance? The answer he gives is more uncomfortable than any of the three endings. Stream Blind Chance (1987) online on iFILM.
