The Returned (Seasons 1–2)
The dead have returned. But this is a homecoming like no other.
Synopsis
The Returned (Les Revenants, 2012) is a French supernatural drama from Canal+ that you can watch online on iFILM — two seasons, sixteen episodes, created and directed by Fabrice Gobert. In a small Alpine town built in the shadow of a massive dam, the dead start coming back. Not as monsters. Just as people, slightly confused, wondering why the front door looks different.
They each land in the wreckage of their own absence. Teenage Camille walks into the lives of parents whose marriage didn't survive her death. A boy named Victor shows up at the apartment of an elderly woman living alone. Simon knocks on the door of the woman he was supposed to marry, who has long since moved on. The series never explains why any of this is happening — no outbreak, no mythology lecture. Instead it keeps its attention on the living: on what it costs to suddenly have back someone you spent years learning to lose. Anne Consigny and Frédéric Pierrot anchor the whole thing as Camille's parents, navigating a grief that has now been handed back to them unsolved.
Shot in a palette of grey-blue mountain light and scored by Scottish post-rock band Mogwai, this is nothing like a zombie series and nothing like a procedural. It's closer to a sustained study of loss and memory, patient enough to make silence do the work. Stream all seasons of The Returned online on iFILM.
