Synopsis
Another Country (1984) is a British drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Marek Kanievska adapted Julian Mitchell's stage play, which traces the public-school years of Guy Bennett — a fictional stand-in for the real Cambridge spy Guy Burgess. Rupert Everett plays Bennett in what became his breakthrough performance; Colin Firth, twenty-three at the time, appears as his Marxist friend Tommy Judd.
The film opens in Moscow in 1983: an ageing Bennett sits across from an American journalist and recalls his final school year half a century earlier. The boarding-school rules were suffocating. His attraction to men had to stay hidden, the prefect hierarchy dispensed privilege arbitrarily, and a friendship with the quietly radical Judd slowly turned his loyalties toward the Soviets. Kanievska and Mitchell keep the emphasis on precise social machinery — wounded pride, boredom, contempt for the class that failed him — rather than ideology.
The film competed at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival. Stream Another Country (1984) online on iFILM.
