Less Than Zero

Clay comes back to Los Angeles for Christmas after his first college semester, expecting little more than a holiday. What he finds instead: his ex-girlfriend Blair is with his best friend Julian, and Julian is deep in debt to his dealer Rip — played with cold precision by James Spader. Clay can see Julian sliding, and Blair wants him to help. Nobody can decide how far that help is supposed to go.

The film is a portrait of a sunlit generation running on empty — expensive cars, flat-lit parties and nothing underneath. Downey's performance as Julian carries a weight beyond the script: he was already fighting addiction at the time, and that collision between the role and his real life gives the movie an unease no actor could manufacture.
