Synopsis
Muriel, or the Time of Return (Muriel, ou le Temps d'un retour, 1963) is a French drama by Alain Resnais — watch it online on iFILM. In the coastal town of Boulogne, antique dealer Hélène is visited by a former lover she hasn't seen in years. He arrives with a young woman he introduces as his niece. Meanwhile her stepson Bernard, just back from military service in Algeria, keeps filming local streets and muttering about a girl named Muriel.
Delphine Seyrig plays Hélène with the composed surface of someone who has learned not to expect much. The reunion with Alphonse circles around things neither party will say directly. Bernard carries a different kind of silence — what he did in Algeria sits inside him like a splinter, and the name Muriel is as close as he gets to saying it. Jean-Baptiste Thiérrée plays the stepson with a restless, damaged energy.
Resnais built the film on cuts that fracture time rather than smooth it, written by Jean Cayrol — a survivor of the Mauthausen concentration camp — who understood how the past ambushes the present. Widely regarded as one of Resnais' most formally bold works, it remains underexposed outside cinephile circles. Stream Muriel, or the Time of Return (1963) online on iFILM.
