Synopsis
Hôtel du Nord (1938) is a classic of French cinema from director Marcel Carné, and you can watch online on iFILM. On the banks of the Canal Saint-Martin, in a modest Paris hotel, a young couple agrees to die together — until the gunshot changes everything.
Pierre shoots his lover Renée and then loses the nerve to turn the gun on himself. She survives, and the two drift apart inside the cramped little world of the hotel, where every lodger carries a private drama. Downstairs live the pimp Edmond and his sharp-tongued companion Raymonde — the source of perhaps the most quoted line in all of French film, her exasperated cry of "Atmosphère! Atmosphère!"
Carné delivered a cornerstone of poetic realism, the movement that found grand tragedy and tenderness in foggy canals, cheap rooms and ordinary people. Annabella and Jean-Pierre Aumont play the doomed young lovers, with Louis Jouvet and Arletty anchoring the floor below. Essential viewing for anyone tracing where French auteur cinema began.
