Synopsis
Port of Shadows (Le quai des brumes, 1938) is Marcel Carné's landmark French drama — watch it online on iFILM. Jean Gabin plays a colonial army deserter who drifts into the port city of Le Havre with no plan beyond finding a ship and disappearing. He has the bearing of a man who has already settled his accounts with hope.
In the fog-soaked harbour he crosses paths with Nelly, played by a then-unknown Michèle Morgan — a young woman kept close by a controlling and dangerous figure. What forms between the two in a single night is fragile enough that the wrong look can shatter it. Michel Simon and Pierre Brasseur play men who have their own business with Jean, and neither is inclined to wait.
Released in 1938, the film became the defining work of French poetic realism, a movement built on fatalism and atmosphere rather than plot mechanics. Carné pulls you into something that feels less like a story and more like a tide coming in. Stream Port of Shadows (1938) online on iFILM.
