Synopsis
A Real Young Girl (Une vraie jeune fille, 1976) is Catherine Breillat's drama, free to watch online on iFILM. A fourteen-year-old comes home from boarding school to her parents' farm for another flat, sun-baked summer in the French countryside. Nothing happens. That is exactly the point.
Bored and curious, she circles a young man who works at the local sawmill, and circles her own body just as warily. Breillat refuses to judge or explain her heroine. The film treats adolescence as a physical state rather than a plot, and reality keeps dissolving into private fantasy until the line between them stops mattering.
This was Breillat's directorial debut, shelved and banned for years before it finally reached screens decades later. Cold, deliberately provocative and far closer to a feminist statement than to erotica, it set the template for everything she made afterward. It is firmly an arthouse proposition, and it is fairer to say so than to oversell it. Stream A Real Young Girl (1976) online on iFILM.
