Complexes

Complexes (I complessi, 1965) is an Italian comedy anthology you can watch online on iFILM. Three short stories about people undone by their own fears and prejudices.

In the first, timid clerk Quirino can't bring himself to confess his feelings to a willing co-worker. In the second, a status-obsessed politician frantically hunts down an old reel where his wife once flashed across the screen nude. In the third, a buck-toothed striver angles for a TV news anchor job while a squeamish committee wants him gone but won't dare say so. Nino Manfredi, Ugo Tognazzi and Alberto Sordi headline.

Several directors split the episodes, among them genre heavyweight Dino Risi, with a score by Armando Trovajoli. This is commedia all'italiana at work, where the laughs grow out of small human weaknesses rather than gags. Lovers of vintage Italian cinema and its great comics will feel right at home.
