Synopsis
A Promise (2013) is a period romance you can watch online on iFILM. French director Patrice Leconte sets the story in Germany on the eve of World War I and casts Rebecca Hall, Alan Rickman and Richard Madden at its center.
A young engineer named Friedrich is hired as private secretary to an aging industrial magnate. The job pulls him into his employer's household and toward Lotte, the much younger wife. Feelings build that neither dares to speak aloud. Then the war breaks out, the two are pulled apart, and they make each other a pledge that will have to survive years of silence and distance.
The script comes from Stefan Zweig's novella Journey into the Past, and it keeps the writer's restraint — longing held back rather than spilled. For Rickman it is one of his late dramatic turns, where half the emotion lives in the pauses. Quiet, slow, handsomely dressed, it suits viewers who prefer what goes unsaid to grand declarations.
