Synopsis

The Girl on the Bridge (La Fille sur le pont, 1999) is a French romantic comedy-drama by Patrice Leconte, shot in striking black and white — watch it online on iFILM. It opens on a Paris bridge at night, where Adèle, a young woman with a talent for catastrophic luck, is leaning over the Seine and considering her options.

A stranger steps in: Gabor, played by Daniel Auteuil, a professional knife thrower who needs a human target for his travelling show. Vanessa Paradis plays Adèle not as a victim but as someone who has simply run out of reasons to be careful. She agrees. The two of them take their act down the northern Mediterranean coast — knives spinning past her temples, audiences gasping, and something between superstition and desire building between the two performers.

Leconte frames the whole thing as a kind of high-wire act: two people keeping each other alive through sheer interdependence. The film picked up multiple César nominations including Best Film. It is romantic without being sentimental, and strange enough to linger. Stream The Girl on the Bridge (1999) on iFILM.
