Synopsis
Day of Wrath (Vredens dag, 1943) — watch online one of Carl Theodor Dreyer's most devastating films, a Danish historical drama made under Nazi occupation. Set in a 17th-century parish gripped by witch trials, it follows Anne, the young second wife of Pastor Absalon, who carries a dangerous secret: her own mother escaped the stake only because Absalon intervened.
When Absalon's son Martin comes home, Anne's carefully contained life starts to crack. A condemned old woman threatens to expose the pastor unless he saves her. Dreyer paces every scene with almost no musical score — just silence, candlelight, and the slow accumulation of dread. The trap closes scene by scene, and none of the characters find a way out.
Shot by cinematographer Karl Andersson with hard light falling through latticed windows, the film is less about historical spectacle than about the mechanics of fear and accusation. It is the kind of picture where the horror is social, not supernatural — and that makes it colder. Stream Day of Wrath (1943) online on iFILM.
