Synopsis
Ordet (1955) is a Danish drama by Carl Theodor Dreyer you can watch online on iFILM. On a remote Jutland farm, the three sons of devout patriarch Morten Borgen hold entirely different relationships with God — one faithful, one lapsed, and one who believes himself to be Jesus Christ.
When the eldest son's wife Inger dies in childbirth, the family's fragile world cracks open. A local pastor offers words he can't back with action. A doctor looks for nothing beyond medicine. The one branded a madman is the only one who acts on faith directly. Dreyer filmed the whole picture in near-static long takes, which makes the final scene hit with the force of a physical shock.
Adapted from the play by Danish minister Kaj Munk, the film took the Golden Lion at Venice in 1955 and has been cited by filmmakers from Ingmar Bergman to Paul Schrader as one of the most serious works ever committed to film. Stream Ordet (1955) online on iFILM.
