Synopsis
The Walking Dead (1936) is a black-and-white Warner Bros. horror you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Michael Curtiz — the man who'd later make Casablanca — with Boris Karloff in the lead.
John Ellman is a hard-luck nobody, and a crooked gang picks him to take the fall for a judge's murder. He's tried, condemned, and sent to the chair before the witnesses who could clear him manage to come forward. A surgeon then revives the executed man through an experimental procedure. What comes back has Ellman's face and a quiet, certain sense of who put him in that chair — and one by one, he goes to find them.
Curtiz plays it as a somber parable about guilt and reckoning rather than a creature-feature romp. Karloff barely speaks, doing the work with his eyes and a heavy, deliberate walk that chills more than any roar. Sixty-six tight minutes of golden-age Gothic.
