Gilbert (2017) — director Neil Berkeley's documentary, streaming on iFILM — spends 96 minutes turning the camera on one of American comedy's least-explainable careers.

Gilbert Gottfried's voice is the kind that lodges in the brain permanently: he gave that screech to Iago the parrot in Aladdin, built a decades-long stand-up reputation on material nobody else would touch, and somehow became an institution. Berkeley finds him at home with his wife Dara and their kids — a genuinely different frequency from the public persona. Dave Attell, Bill Burr, Whoopi Goldberg, and Dick Van Dyke are among those interviewed, but the film's real subject is what someone like Gottfried looks like when he stops performing.
