Synopsis
The Unfaithful Wife (La Femme infidèle, 1969) is Claude Chabrol's quiet thriller, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A comfortable husband in the suburbs of Versailles starts to suspect his wife, and the calm of their country house cracks for the first time.
Charles and Hélène have a settled life: a house, a son, his daily commute to Paris. Lately she goes into the city too — the hairdresser, a film, she says. Strange that she can never describe the film. The suspicion grows slowly, without scenes or shouting, until Charles decides to learn the lover's name himself. Michel Bouquet plays the husband with a closed, unreadable face, Stéphane Audran the wife, Maurice Ronet the other man.
They called Chabrol the French Hitchcock for good reason: he builds tension out of silence, glances and objects rather than chases. This is cold, exact filmmaking about how bourgeois peace rests on a lie, and what happens when the lie is finally spoken aloud. Made for anyone who loves European suspense without a single special effect. Stream The Unfaithful Wife (1969) online on iFILM.
