Synopsis
The House That Screamed (La residencia, 1969) is a Spanish horror film you can watch online on iFILM. Director Chicho Ibáñez Serrador sets it inside a remote 19th-century boarding school for troubled girls, where the rulebook runs on whippings and silence.
Madame Fourneau, played by Lilli Palmer, governs the place like a prison and keeps her fragile son Luis hidden away from the students. Then a new arrival, Teresa, starts to notice the cracks. Girls vanish from the dormitories one by one, and nobody upstairs seems eager to ask why. Cristina Galbó and Mary Maude play the students drawn closest to the truth.
Serrador built a slow, candle-lit dread years before Euro-gothic horror became fashionable: long takes, a cold roving camera, secrets traded in stone corridors. The ending lands harder than most films from 1969 dared to go, which is why this one keeps turning up on lists of underrated genre cinema. Stream The House That Screamed (1969) online on iFILM.
