Tom, out of prison and trying to stay clean, takes a job hauling gravel for the Hawlett haulage company. Pay is per load, the routes are brutal, and the top driver — Red — treats a narrow road at full throttle as his natural environment. Tom starts matching him run for run. Red doesn't take it well. What begins as a professional grudge turns uglier once Tom starts asking questions about where the money actually goes. The driving sequences were shot without much softening — the trucks feel large and genuinely fast. Watch for Sean Connery, Jill Ireland, and David McCallum in early supporting roles.
