Synopsis
Mary, Queen of Scots (1971) is a British historical drama directed by Charles Jarrott — stream it online on iFILM. Vanessa Redgrave plays Mary Stuart and Glenda Jackson plays Elizabeth I, two cousins and rival queens who never once share the screen in peace.
Mary is proclaimed Queen of Scotland at six days old and returns from France as a grown Catholic woman into a Protestant kingdom that doesn't want her. Her claim to the English throne makes Elizabeth nervous. Two marriages — Lord Darnley (Timothy Dalton) and the Earl of Bothwell (Nigel Davenport) — bring Mary power and scandal in equal measure. She's imprisoned at twenty-three and spends nineteen years waiting before the axe falls.
Both leads picked up Oscar nominations — Redgrave in the lead category, Jackson for supporting — which tells you how evenly matched the two performances are. Jarrott keeps the politics clear without draining the personal stakes dry. Watch Mary, Queen of Scots (1971) on iFILM.
