Synopsis
Charulata (1964) is Satyajit Ray's drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Calcutta in the 1870s, a grand house of cool rooms and shuttered windows. Charu is bored. Her husband Bhupati pours himself into the English-language political weekly he publishes, and barely notices the wife waiting just down the hall.
To ease her loneliness, Bhupati asks his young cousin Amal to keep her company. Charu writes, Amal scribbles poems, and a shared love of literature draws them together through long talks in the garden and laughter over a single line. Madhabi Mukherjee plays a woman who feels alive for the first time in years, only to sense the friendship sliding toward something the era and her marriage will never forgive. Soumitra Chatterjee, as Amal, walks the same fine line between innocence and guilt.
Ray adapted the screenplay from Rabindranath Tagore's novella The Broken Nest, and many critics — along with the director himself — count this among his most flawless films; it earned him the directing prize at the Berlin festival. The famous garden-swing sequence, the camera swaying right along with her, has long been a textbook scene. Slow, tender and quietly devastating, it's a film for anyone who treasures great auteur cinema. Stream Charulata (1964) online on iFILM.
