Synopsis
Weekend at Dunkirk (Week-end à Zuydcoote, 1964) is Henri Verneuil's war drama, free to watch online on iFILM. Two days in June 1940, on the open sand near Dunkirk, with a small group of French soldiers left behind.
Jean-Paul Belmondo plays Sergeant Julien Maillat, stranded on the beach with what remains of his unit. The British are loading their ships and sailing home, the front is collapsing, and German planes strafe the dunes again and again. One question hangs over every man: shove through the crush at the jetties and cross to Britain, or stay and fight. Around Maillat are rattled comrades played by Georges Géret and Pierre Mondy, and a young woman, Catherine Spaak, trapped in a half-ruined house in the middle of it all.
Verneuil skips the heroics and films the mud, the exhaustion and the panic of troops their own generals abandoned. The script comes from Robert Merle's Goncourt-winning novel, and the whole thing rests on Belmondo's quiet, deliberately un-heroic turn. If you want an honest film about retreat with no flag-waving, this one delivers. Stream Weekend at Dunkirk (1964) online on iFILM.
