Synopsis
Northern France, 1956. The Deep Dark (Gueules noires, 2023) is a French horror film from Mathieu Turi that you can watch online on iFILM. A crew of coal miners is ordered to escort an odd professor a thousand meters underground to collect rock samples.
A cave-in seals off the way back up. Trapped, the miners stumble onto a stone crypt that has no business being down there and, without meaning to, wake something that slept in the dark for centuries. From there it's cramped tunnels, dying lamps, and a creature for which a narrow coal seam makes the perfect hunting pit. There's nowhere to run with a thousand meters of rock overhead. Samuel Le Bihan, Amir El Kacem and Jean-Hugues Anglade lead the descent.
Turi shoots a claustrophobic monster movie almost entirely without daylight, where the real dread is the mine itself, ready to become a shared grave. A solid pick if you go for grim subterranean horror in the vein of The Descent. Stream The Deep Dark (2023) online on iFILM.
