Synopsis
The Devil's Envoys (Les Visiteurs du soir, 1942) is a French fantasy classic you can watch online on iFILM. Marcel Carné shot it in occupied Paris, anchoring the story in the late 15th century: two minstrels ride into a nobleman's castle, charm the household, and quietly begin dismantling it from within — because both answer to the Devil.
Jules Berry plays him with polished contempt, overseeing his agents from a comfortable distance. Arletty is Dominique, cold and purposeful until she isn't. Marie Déa plays Anne, the lord's daughter, caught between obligation and something she can't name. When the plan starts to fracture, the Devil steps in personally.
Screenwriters Jacques Prévert and Pierre Laroche set the story in a medieval fairy tale deliberately: audiences living under occupation read the subtext without needing it spelled out. Dark power can do a great deal — stopping a heartbeat turned out to be beyond it. A cornerstone of French Poetic Realism. Stream The Devil's Envoys online on iFILM.
