Synopsis
An Empress and the Warriors (2008) is a period wuxia epic from director Ching Siu-tung, and you can watch online on iFILM. Ancient China lies splintered by endless war; the kingdom of Yan has battled neighboring Zhao for years, and in the thick of one campaign the king is murdered by his own power-hungry nephew.
With no male heir left, the throne passes to Princess Fei'er, played by Kelly Chen. A soldier at heart rather than a courtier, she has to wear the crown and fend off her cousin Wu Ba's coup at the same time. General Muyong, played by Donnie Yen, stands as her shield — but when the wounded empress is hidden away in the forest, she meets a reclusive healer, played by Leon Lai, and her heart starts arguing with her duty. Ching, who choreographed the fights in Hero, stages every clash like a dance of arrows, cavalry and crossed swords.
It's a handsome, slightly naive costume picture where the battlefield matters more than the inner life. A good fit for fans of Asian spectacle in the vein of House of Flying Daggers who tune in for the choreography and scale. Stream An Empress and the Warriors (2008) online on iFILM.
