Synopsis
Jacquot de Nantes (1991) is a biographical drama by Agnès Varda you can watch online on iFILM — a portrait of her husband, New Wave director Jacques Demy, as a boy in late 1930s Nantes. His father runs a garage; his mother does hair; and young Jacquot is consumed by cinema in a way no one around him quite tracks.
Varda intercuts the black-and-white reconstruction of his childhood with colour footage of Demy in his final illness. The film came out in 1991, the year he died. Three different child actors play Jacquot at different ages; Demy himself appears toward the end. It is part origin story, part farewell — one filmmaker's document of another.
