Synopsis
Duel to the Death (1983) is a Hong Kong fantasy action film — stream it online on iFILM. Every decade, the finest swordsman from China faces the finest from Japan in a single, lethal contest of honor. The film is set in the Ming Dynasty, and both nations have already chosen their champions.
Chinese champion Bo Ching-Wan and Japanese warrior Miyamoto are prepared for a clean fight. Then a conspiracy surfaces: a squad of ninja has been deployed to rig the outcome and steal sacred Chinese scrolls during the chaos. Miyamoto, unwilling to win through deception, turns his blade on his own allies. Director Ching Siu-Tung — who would go on to craft A Chinese Ghost Story — fills the frame with wire-work acrobatics that still look kinetic more than forty years on.
The fight choreography was ahead of its moment, and the film holds up as one of the more inventive wuxia entries of the early 1980s. Watch Duel to the Death (1983) online on iFILM.
