Carmen

Carmen (1983) is a Spanish musical drama from director Carlos Saura you can watch online on iFILM — the second entry in his flamenco trilogy, after Blood Wedding (1981).

Choreographer Antonio, played by Antonio Gades, auditions dancers for a flamenco ballet based on Bizet's opera. The woman who gets the title role — Laura del Sol — starts to undo him. Rehearsals deepen; the border between the story they're staging and his own obsession becomes harder to locate. The score was composed and performed by Paco de Lucía.

The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and took the BAFTA in that category. Saura's concept was to film the process, not the opera — to show what happens when Don José's jealousy stops being a character's problem and becomes the director's own.
