Synopsis
Gamera vs. Gyaos (1967) is the Japanese kaiju brawl you can watch online on iFILM — director Noriaki Yuasa's third outing for the giant flying turtle, billed at the time as a "Giant Monster Dogfight."
Volcanic eruptions wake Gyaos, a bat-like horror the size of a cathedral that can shear anything in two with a supersonic ray. It flattens a village, derails a highway project, then sets its sights on Japan's cities while scientists and the military run out of ideas. The only one who trusts Gamera enough to call for help is a small boy nobody listens to.
Yuasa worked on a shoestring and still delivered: midair duels between the two monsters, geysers of Gyaos blood, and that signature shot of Gamera tucking in and jetting off on its own shell. This isn't grim, city-leveling Godzilla — it's a scrappy kids' kaiju with all the rubber-suit charm of late-sixties Daiei. A treat if you have a soft spot for vintage monster cinema.
