Honeymoon with My Mother

José Luis gets dumped at the altar with two tickets to paradise already paid for. Rather than waste them, his overprotective mother Mari Carmen tags along. While he sulks through what should have been a honeymoon, she throws herself into the holiday of a lifetime, snorkeling, dancing, befriending strangers. Somewhere between the cocktails, he realizes he barely knows the woman who raised him.

Carmen Machi carries the whole thing, playing a mother who is exasperating and quietly lovable in the same breath. Director Paco Caballero keeps the resort-comedy mood breezy while sneaking in a real idea: grown kids rediscovering their parents as people. The beats are familiar, sure, but Machi makes them land.
