Synopsis
Testament of Orpheus (1960) is Jean Cocteau's final film, and you can watch it online on iFILM. The poet and director steps in front of the camera himself, playing a traveller adrift in time who wanders the bare landscapes of his own imagination.
There's no plot in the usual sense. Instead a chain of encounters with phantoms, symbols and figures from his earlier work: the poet stands trial, chases inspiration, and reaches for his own rebirth. Cocteau turns film into a waking dream, reviving motifs from Orphée and Beauty and the Beast.
Pablo Picasso, Yul Brynner, Brigitte Bardot, Charles Aznavour and Jean Marais drift through in tiny cameos — friends Cocteau gathered to say goodbye. This isn't a movie for anyone after a tidy story; it's an artist's poetic last will on death, art and the maker behind it. Strange, handmade and deeply personal.
