The film never pretends to catch its subject off guard. Birkin plays a medieval martyr, a jungle heroine, a figure from an old painting — cycling through costumes and centuries while Varda's camera watches and asks questions. Varda's son Mathieu Demy and Birkin's daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg both appear alongside her.
